The Spokane Young Men's Chritian Association (Y.M.C.A.) was established on November 4, 1884. It combined interests in social, physical and spiritual welfare to function as an agency promoting good will, fitness and Christian fellowship among young men. The collection includes materials on the history of the YMCA in Spokane, the capital campaign for a new building and its construction (1930-1967), photographs of activities and programs (1900s-1990s), and an addendum of materials received in 2008. Much of the history cited is reflected in the organization of the folios which follow. There are three major sections in the file: history, the YMCA organization in Spokane, and the capital campaign for a new building and its construction. Unfortunately, minutes of the Board of Trustees between 1907 and 1955 are not part of the file. Boxes 11 and 12 contain photographs and snapshots, many in color, which portray the activities of the local Y.M.C.A. organization. In the section describing the campaign for the new building (boxes 5-7) the list of prospects and donors covers a wide swath: businesses, foundations and Spokane "movers and shakers". Boxes 13-16 describe the Board of Trustees, its organization and committees from 1983 through 1997 (some earlier records, 1898-1962, are in legal size folders). The campaign for a new downtown facility and the construction of a new facility in the Spokane Valley are described in considerable detail. The careful surveys of public opinion regarding both projects contributed to their success.
